Military Benefits

The United States Veterans Administration operates various education-assistance programs for veterans and active-duty service members along with eligible spouses and dependents. All eligibility criteria can be found at http://benefits.va.gov/gibill/. To apply for veterans’ educational benefits online, log onto https://www.va.gov/education/how-to-apply/ and complete the VA Form 22-1990 for new applicants or 22-1995 for returning applicants. Once completed the VA will mail the applicant a Certificate of Eligibility. Students must forward a copy of this COE to the Office of the University Registrar at gibill@registrar.unc.edu to ensure a timely certification of benefits. Additionally, official academic transcripts from all post-secondary schools previously attended must be on file by end of the first semester to continue certification.

Effective August 1, 2019, NC SAA, or the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, requires that our educational institution must permit any covered individual to attend or participate in the course of education during the period beginning on the date the individual provides to the educational institution a VA certificate of eligibility for entitlement to educational assistance under chapter 31 or 33 (a “certificate of eligibility” can also include a “Statement of Benefits” obtained from the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) website – eBenefits, or a VAF 28-1905 form for chapter 31authorization purposes) and ending on the earlier of the following dates:

  1. The date on which payment from VA is made to the institution.
  2. 90 days after the date the institution certified tuition and fees following the receipt of the certificate of eligibility.

UNC Chapel Hill will not impose any penalty, including the assessment of late fees, the denial of access to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities, or the requirement that a covered individual borrow additional funds, on any covered individual because of the individual’s inability to meet his or her financial obligations to the institution due to the delayed disbursement funding from VA under chapter 31 or 33.

NOTE: A Covered Individual is any individual who is entitled to educational assistance under chapter 31, Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment, or chapter 33, Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits.

For all students using Ch 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits– Enrollment Verification is now required to receive your Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA). What is enrollment verification? Enrollment verification is a new requirement for Post-9/11 GI Bill students to verify that they have remained enrolled in the same courses or training every month. Students who receive MHA/kicker payments will have their payments withheld if they fail to verify or report that they are no longer enrolled in their courses or training. To streamline the process, VA is providing the option to verify enrollment easily and securely via text message. This requirement is only for Post-9/11 GI Bill and does not impact other programs. More information and instructions can be found here: http://benefits.va.gov/gibill/

Scholarships

Scholarships are offered and overseen by the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Foundation. These are need and merit-based school scholarships.  All returning students have the opportunity to apply for over $1,000,000 in School-sponsored scholarships each year with scholarships ranging from $1,250 to $10,000. A competitive application process is overseen by the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Foundation. An online application utilizes a holistic rubric to objectively evaluate applications (e.g., professional development, participation in scholarly endeavors, impact, commitment to school and community, self-awareness) and to make awards based on donor intent.

Financial Aid

Financial aid is available for all students. Once your financial aid eligibility is finalized, it is your responsibility to complete all necessary disbursement requirements (such as Master Promissory Notes and loan counseling) to ensure funds are sent to UNC Chapel Hill to be credited toward your tuition balance. Please note that all billing of tuition is handled by the main campus Student Accounts and University Receivables (referred to as the Cashier’s Office). All financial aid disburses directly to the Cashier’s Office to be credited toward any outstanding tuition balance that is owed by the student. All students are responsible for completing financial aid applications and disbursement requirements in a timely fashion to ensure that their funds are available to pay tuition by published due dates.
